"I guess you would call me the ‘Old Timer’ of
the APS employees. I started working here two week after graduation
in 1967!"
“I began in the Administration Department,
which handles all membership information, and I still work for the
same department keeping the Society’s records up-to-date. One
of things I do is schedule and send slide programs to chapters. I
do enjoy this part of the job because I get to talk to some of the
members and after awhile they start to feel like old friends when
they call.
“When I first started to work for the APS,
I never dreamed I would stay on to see four different Executive Directors
and four different buildings during my career. Remembering back to
the beginning, I first went to work in a small office in downtown
State College, one large room that held everything that was offered
to members, and maybe 10 or 12 employees. Things have changed since
then ― and, I would say, for the better. Services such as the
library, the sales division, and The American Philatelist that
were once scattered all over the country are now centralized at one
location.
“I travel only six miles round trip to work
each day. If you come here on Interstate 80 and follow Route 150
South to the American Philatelic Center in Bellefonte, you’ll
pass right through my little town, which has about 1,150 people.
I have lived in the Milesburg all my life ― in the house my
grandmother was born in ― with my sister, my nephew, and several
happy cats.
“After all these years, I must confess that I am still not what
I would call a stamp collector, but rather an accumulator of stamps.”
