Staff Profile

Ken Martin — APS Chief Operating Officer

Ken was introduced to stamp collecting when two friends brought their collections into school toward the end of the 5th grade. Assisted by relatives who agreed to save stamps from their mail he has been a collector ever since.

Ken joined the APS in 1980 and attended the APS Summer Seminar on Philately in 1982 just prior to starting as a student at Penn State. That fall he attended his first local stamp club meeting and in his second term at Penn State founded the Penn State Stamp Club. While a Penn State student Ken also served the Junior Philatelists of America (JPA) in a number of capacities including President and Editor. In 1986 he skipped his college graduation to spend three days helping to set up AMERIPEX and to staff the JPA table for all 11 days of the show.

After graduate study Ken moved to Sarasota, Florida to work on retirement community development. While there he joined the Sarasota and Venice stamp clubs, led a school youth stamp group, and played an active role with the Sarasota National Stamp Exhibition. After 18 months in Sarasota he applied for a position with the APS. Ken was not chosen but subsequently accepted an offer for a position in the Sales Division. He accepted Youth Coordinator and Development responsibilities eight months later, and five months after that Show responsibilities. In June 2006 Ken became Deputy Executive Director for the American Philatelic Society, in April 2010 Executive Director, and in August 2014 Chief Operating Officer.

Ken served as Bourse Chair and Floor Manager for the Washington 2006 World Philatelic Exhibition and on the Organizing Committee for World Stamp Show New York 2016. He has presented over 20 different programs to about a dozen local stamp clubs, at many APS shows, the last four U.S. international exhibitions, and to more than a dozen non-philatelic organizations such as Rotary and Lions Clubs. Ken collects used worldwide but focuses on the areas of blood donation/transfusion, nondenominated stamps, and covers documenting the mechanization and automation of the mails. A nationally accredited chief judge, his blood exhibit has won most popular, best thematic, and creativity awards at the national level.

Outside of philately Ken is past board chair for the Greater Alleghenies Blood Region and Mid-Central Chapter of the American Red Cross, has served on the Red Cross Pennsylvania State Services Council and the National Awards and Recognition Committee. He has donated about 800 units of blood including more than ten gallons of whole blood and over 700 platelet apheresis products. Nine years on the Patton Township Planning Committee included service as chairman. He is currently Secretary of the Rotary Club of State College/Downtown and serves on the boards for the Central Pennsylvania Convention and Visitors Bureau and Historic Bellefonte, Inc.
