Mexico offers collecting challenges, ranging from collecting a simple overview to in-depth specialization in many areas. There are several resources available to collectors to help meet the challenge of collecting such a rewarding area. Recommendations for specialized and general collectors differ. There are two excellent English language references, while Spanish and German titles round out the list. There are several very good specialized catalogs covering postal markings, early issues including district overprints, 1914-16 era, the revolutionary era, and more contemporary issues. Unfortunately, there are no comprehensive “omnibus”-type catalogs covering the whole of Mexican philately in English. The Collectors Club of Chicago (www.collectorsclubchicago.org) has produced a specialized work [out of print] also by Nicholas Follansbee on the Stamps of the Mexican Revolution which is available from their website in electronic format. That is an essential reference for the tumultuous 1913-1917 revolution period when there were several competing governments with a multitude of postal issues. The best general “overview” work in English is the Scott catalog volume covering “Mexico.” It has good general listings and coverage of earlier issues and more recent “Exporta” issues. However, it is superficial when compared with more specialized works and should suffice for the “general” collector. The best specialized work in Spanish is the Celis Cano specialized catalog series. These are several hard cover editions produced from 1960s through the mid 1970s. The series is now out of print but occasionally available from secondary sources. Some production/census data is included. The German-language publisher MICHEL produces a comprehensive catalog on later issues, including specialized listings of 1950-60s “Arts and Architecture” and 1970-80s Exporta stamp issues. These include some very specialized breakdowns, more useful for specialists than the average collector.

A series of spiral bound catalogs covering Postal Markings has been privately produced by Dr. Peter Taylor. These works cover markings from the colonial era through the 1880s, which are of interest to many Mexican collectors. Information as to availability, pricing, and shipping is available from the author, Dr. Peter Taylor, at P.O. Box 53, Woodland, WA 98674. MEPSI, the Mexican specialty society, has a list of resources listed on its website at www.MEPSI.org. Material is updated on a regular basis.
