A 2-Day Course Presented by Leopold Beaudet

O Canada. Assemble an Admiral collection. Compile a specialized Centennial collection.

Course Description:

Canadian philately offers a wide range of collecting areas, from stampless to modern, has readily available material and is supported by extensive philatelic literature.
Delve into two definitive issues that introduced major innovations in plate making, stamp production, and postal usages. Explore the dies, plates, lathework, shades, re-entries, retouches, precancels, and postal rates of the 1911-1928 Admiral issue. Examine the printing, paper, gum, perforation, and tagging changes that the marked the 1967-1972 Centennial issue.
Identify and evaluate the significance of various types of errors, plate flaws, and varieties. Familiarize yourself with philatelic literature, online resources and specialist societies.
Enjoy the philatelic challenges of collecting items from Canada and British North America.

Intended Audience:

Intermediate to advanced collectors with an interest in the stamps and postal history of Canada and British North America.

Meet the Instructor

Leopold Beaudet

Leopold Beaudet began to seriously collect Canadian stamps in 1971 when hibrite paper varieties on Centennial definitives started appearing in post offices. He has written about Elizabethan stamp varieties, and was awarded the RPSC Geldert Medal for the series of articles titled “Canadian Stamp Varieties” that appeared in Canadian Philatelist between 1980 and 1986. Leopold did extensive research on the Centennial definitives at Library and Archives Canada, culminating in a detailed article in the D. Robin Harris catalogue, Centennial Definitives Series 1967 – 1973. He has also written articles for BNA Topics, Maple Leaves, PHSC Journal, Canadian Stamp News, and several BNAPS study group newsletters. In 2014, Leo became BNAPS Webmaster.
In 2001, Leopold began editing the BNAPS Admiral Study Group newsletter, The Admiral’s Log, and wrote about his examination of the Admiral plate proofs at Library and Archives Canada. In 2011, he collaborated with members of the Admiral Study Group on a two-frame exhibit of the Admiral issue to mark its centenary. The exhibit was shown in the Court of Honour at BNAPEX 2011 in North Bay, ON.
Leopold is a member of RPSC, BNAPS, CPS of GB, PHSC, SHPQ, and PSSC. He is a Fellow of the Royal and a member of the BNAPS Order of the Beaver.
