APS/APRL OFFICERS ELECTED
Final Results Certified by APS Board of Elections
The American Philatelic Society announced the results of the officers’ elections for the APS Board of Directors and the American Philatelic Research Library Board of Trustees. Ballots were mailed with the May 2022 issue of The American Philatelist or sent separately to those who do not receive the monthly journal.
Ballots Received
In 2022, 3,846 APS members cast ballots for the election, a 15 percent participation rate. By comparison, 1,986 members (7 percent) voted in 2019 and 3,961 members (13 percent) in 2016.
APS Board of Directors
Ten of the eleven APS Board seats were up for election in 2022. Several Board members left the Board as a result of term limits. APS Board members are elected to a three-year term, beginning in August 2022.
Robert “Bob” Zeigler, who became President in 2018, was elected to his second full term as APS President. Zeigler was elected in 2016 as part of the three-member Board of Vice Presidents, with outgoing Board members Trish Kaufmann and Jeff Shapiro, both subject to term limits.
The slate of Mark Banchik, Cheryl Ganz, and Yamil Kouri was elected as the Board of Vice Presidents. Dr. Ganz was appointed to the Board of Vice Presidents in 2018 to replace Zeigler. Drs. Banchik and Kouri are no strangers to the APS Board, with Banchik serving as Vice President from 2011 to 2013 and Kouri serving as Vice President from 2013 to 2016.
Dr. Peter P. McCann, past President of the APS and completing his second term as Director-at-Large, will replace Steve Schumann as Secretary in the upcoming term. Schumann is leaving the Board due to term limits.
Returning as APS Treasurer is Kathryn “Kathy” Johnson, who served as APS Treasurer from 2011 to 2013 and as Director-at-Large from 2009 to 2011.
The four candidates elected as Directors-at-Large are Elizabeth “Liz” Hisey, who has chaired the Committee on the Accreditation of National Exhibiting and Judging since 2016. Michael Cortese, Vice President of NobleSpirit, was part of the 2013 class of the Young Philatelic Leaders Fellows program and co-hosts the Conversations with Philatelists podcast. Matthew “Matt” Kewriga, who works for Schuyler Rumsey Philatelic Auctions, is President of the Scandinavian Collectors Club. Evan Seigling, past Interim Executive Director of the American Stamp Dealers Association and past Board member of the American Topical Association.
Steve Reinhard will again serve as APS Past President, a position he has held since 2016. Reinhard served as APS President from 2013 to 2016. The Past President is the only non-elected position on the APS Board of Directors.
APRL Board of Trustees
In 2022, two Trustees were elected by the APS membership-at-large, one member was elected to represent the Founders/Patron/Vooys Fellows, and the APS President will appoint one. The incoming Trustees will serve a six-year term beginning in August 2022.
Charles Epting, President of H.R. Harmer Auctions in New York City, 2015 alumnus of the Young Philatelic Leaders Fellows program, and co-host of the Conversations with Philatelists podcast, was elected to serve as Trustee.
Rich Drews, serving as APS Director-at-Large since 2016, will serve as the Founder/Patrons/Vooys Fellow representative beginning in August. Drews, who ran unopposed, was declared the winner at the close of the filing period.
Notice of Vacancy
John Barwis, nominated as Trustee elected by the APS membership, stated he would not serve after the ballots were mailed but before the polling closed. There will be a vacancy on the APRL Board of Trustees at the start of the term.
To fill a vacancy, the APRL Board of Trustees nominates a candidate who the APS President then confirms. To fill the vacancy, we will accept applications from interested parties for consideration by the APRL Board of Trustees. Interested candidates can contact APS Executive Director Scott English at [email protected]. The deadline for consideration will be July 31, 2022.
Start of the Term and Organizational Meetings
Newly elected APS and APRL Boards officers will take the oath of office following the annual membership meeting on Saturday, August 27, 2022, during the Great American Stamp Show held in Sacramento, CA. The APS and APRL Boards will hold an organizational meeting on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at 1 pm.
Election Results
The election results were certified by the 2022 Board of Elections, APS members Rick Banks, Darlene Bloom, Leonard Bloom, and Tom Horn. Woodycrest United Methodist Church members in State College, Pennsylvania, assisted in counting ballots.
