Ever wonder what it’s like to work in a philatelic research library? Are you a librarian with an interest in philately or a philatelist with an affinity for libraries? If you are, the American Philatelic Research Library is currently looking to fill the position of Library Assistant. The position is full-time (primarily Monday – Friday, with some annual weekend work) and will include a number of administrative and library-related duties.
Administrative tasks will include the processing of incoming and outgoing mail; the filing of library service invoices and request forms; greeting and assisting visitors to the library in person, via email and by phone; and the processing of transactions in our gift shop.
Among the primary library tasks included are the fielding, documenting and answering of general library requests (i.e. borrowing of library materials, sending scans and photocopies, etc.) as they are received via phone, email and mail; the re-shelving of library materials; circulation tasks such as checking in/checking out of borrowed library materials, and other library duties as assigned.
Applicants should demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills as well as experience and a demonstrated working knowledge of basic business software (MS Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, etc.). Some library experience or degree is a plus but not necessary. The successful applicant will be trained in using the library’s GeniePlus library software for daily use with library-related tasks and in other library procedures as needed. Knowledge of stamps and stamp collecting is a plus but not necessary for the position.
