On Saturday, September 21, more than 1200 people flocked to WPSU in State College, Pennsylvania, to meet Cookie Monster and celebrate fifty years of public television's most beloved show, Sesame Street.
At WPSU, kids learned to recycle while helping to find Oscar the Grouch's pet worm, Slimy. They practiced mindfulness and meditation in Big Bird's Cozy Comfy Nest and explored safe PBS Kids-created apps and games with Abby Cadabby. They learned which foods are healthy choices at Mr. Hooper's Healthy Eating Store, put on puppet shows, and took pictures with Cookie Monster.
Did we mention that they also started their own stamp collections?
The American Philatelic Society Education and Youth coordinators helped hundreds of kids learn How the Post Office Works in the space of a few short hours. Kids sorted through a pile of used stamps and paste them into their very own beginner albums, which have categories like "animals," "sports," and more.
They were able to write and decorate "postcards" to their favorite Sesame Street friends, adorn their cards with used stamps donated by APS members, and receive a special American Philatelic Society cancellation. Then they dropped their letters into the postbox and learned about sending mail and how to use the Post Office.
So before we hand deliver these letters straight to Sesame Street, we'll share our favorites.
