The American Philatelic Society is proud to announce that Richard F. Winter and John H. Barwis are the winners of the 2022-23 Richard F. Winter Cup for their book North Atlantic Non-Contract Steamship Sailings, 1838-1875.
This lovingly researched and compiled volume serves as a companion to Winter’s now iconic reference text, North Atlantic Mail Sailings 1840-75. Co-authored with the late Walter Hubbard and published in 1988, NAMS represents a major achievement in codifying the routes, ships, and sailings in the mid-19th century for contract mail, and remains the standard reference to this day. However, ships carrying non-contract mail were not included, and since NAMS was published, Winter had hoped and planned to one day produce a second volume. After a 35-year publishing break and a new partnership with John Barwis, NANCSS has arrived to fill the gaps left by its predecessor. Paralleling the structure and approach of NAMS, NANCSS is a user friendly guide that is a highly valuable addition to the collection of any postal history collector. It is also beautifully illustrated with example covers, ship images and original sailing advertisements.
“Congratulations to Dick Winter and John Barwis for this incredible recognition for the latest entry into the North Atlantic series we’ve proudly published over the years,” said Scott English, Executive Director of the APS. “We’re proud to bring this resource to collectors and it is quickly becoming a best seller in our philatelic literature category.”
The Richard F. Winter Cup is awarded annually by the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society to authors or creators of print, electronic or digital media concerning United States postal history from the Colonial period to 1900. Established in 2019, past winners include Mark Schwartz, Steve C. Walske, and Yamil H. Kouri, Jr.
NANCSS is a welcome and significant work on U.S. postal history of the period, from two of the most accomplished philatelic authors in recent memory. It will serve as an excellent companion and complementary work to its predecessor. The APS joins the USPCS in congratulating Mr. Winter and Mr. Barwis for their accomplishment.
