The struggles faced by Finland over the years to defend her borders against at least one of her neighbouring countries are probably not familiar to many. As seen from a philatelic perspective, they were carefully and thoroughly described in a display and presentation given by Michael Elliott FRPSL to the members of the Royal Philatelic Society London on 18 November.
Michael’s talk followed a timeline from 1808 through to 1945, from the period of Russification and ending with the Lapland War when in 1944 the Soviet army mounted a massive offensive. Every phase was recorded with fine material, much difficult to acquire.
It was ‘a very interesting display of an absorbing subject’ commented Eric Keefe FRPSL giving the vote of thanks, one that demonstrated the ability of the Finnish people to show ‘perseverance, sheer guts and to carry on under all circumstances’.
Receiving the plaquette presented to all who give presentations and displays to the Society, Michael revealed that ‘it is something I have always wanted’.
