Fellow member Gary Danzer recently shared how he and his wife have prepared a display about stamp collecting for their local library. I wanted to share his idea as well as encourage others to share how you are getting the word out. Sharing resources and ideas with each other is a great way to help our hobby grow.
Elk Grove Village, Illinois - Public Library Lobby
The lobby is home to two 6-foot display windows. My wife and I plastered both sections with colorful stamps, covers, and stamp collecting paraphernalia in order to encourage the advancement of the stamp collecting hobby. We have a Frisbee from the US Post Office Backyard games First Day of Issue ceremony. We included a map of the world from 1952. We added First Day covers, a copy of the Scott Catalog, an US Album and an Uncle Sam mouse pad. A set of US presidents from the 1986 Ameripex Show was included as well as stamp tongs, hinges and stock books. We added the 29 and 32-cent US post cards depicting jazz singers. A number of topicals were included showing butterflies, birds, cats, dogs, airplanes, ships and fish. We included several pages of the Celebrate the Century because they are colorful as well as educational. Several country pages from Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Australia, Mexico were included. We include new issues and old stamps to show the hobby from 1840 to the present. As a part of the exhibit we steer interested people to the web sites of several local stamp clubs for more information on Stamp Collecting.
