Recently I wrote about the challenges the American Philatelic Society (APS) faced planning for 2021 given the pandemic, distribution of the vaccine, and the willingness of APS members to participate in in-person events. Our polling of instructors and frequent attendees, based upon these factors, indicated that less than 40 percent were very likely to attend Summer Seminar in 2021 if it was an in-person event.
Therefore, after careful consideration and consultation with instructors and members, we've decided that the Summer Seminar should be virtual again in 2021. It’s not an easy decision given the benefit of bringing together APS members here in Bellefonte and the tremendous learning opportunities for everyone involved. It’s also a chance for friends to spend time together while sharing the hobby we love.
In 2020, we had more than 1,500 registrants participate in courses over the month of June. Now that even more members are comfortable with online meeting platforms, and we have ample time to organize courses and work with instructors, this will be a rewarding event for everyone.
While we will not host more than 50 courses like we did in 2020, we will work to provide eight different fee-based in-depth learning experiences, some “Free Friday” sessions, and bring a social element to this year’s event.
We always welcome your thoughts. If you have suggestions or questions about Summer Seminar Online, please contact the Education Department at [email protected]. For more information about the Summer Seminar Online, please visit our website at www.stamps.org/summer-seminar. Course descriptions will be posted by March 1st and registration will open on May 1st.
