While the United States Postal Service is popular among Americans polled by the Pew Research Center, it is also in trouble.
A recent report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) paints its financial picture as dire, and the outgoing Postmaster General Megan Brennan says the USPS could go bankrupt without government support.
How would you fix the USPS? Reader comments have begun pouring in. Like these pulled from Facebook recently:
"The USPS has run solely on sales from products and services and receives no federal dollars, so why can’t the government just start allocating federal funds?"
"To help we all would have to send more 1st class letters (that no one writes anymore). But also quit giving such big discounts on junk mail pushers. Credit card companies, political mailers. LOL."
"USPS needs to be able to run more like a business. They need to be able to consolidate post offices for example."
"Eliminate Saturday deliveries of mail."
And lastly, "if you think you can do without your mail them by all means take your box down. See if it fits you."
