Position Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key member of the executive leadership team and is responsible for the strategic and day-to-day financial leadership of the organization. This role combines the responsibilities of a traditional comptroller with forward-looking financial analysis. The CFO will oversee financial record-keeping for our organization. The CFO is also responsible for financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, and compliance, as well as coordinating audit and investment activities and reporting, while delivering financial analysis that informs operational and strategic decision-making across all core functions. The CFO will regularly interact with the Board of our organization.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Strategy & Planning

  • Lead the development of annual budgets, long-range financial forecasts, and scenario planning.
  • Partner with the CEO and executive team to align financial planning with organizational priorities, especially during digital transformation.
  • Provide actionable financial insights and reporting to guide strategic and operational decisions.

Accounting, Financial & HR Operations

  • Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and monthly closings.  Upgrade and stabilize our foundational financial and accounting processes.
  • Ensure accuracy, timeliness, and transparency in financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and relevant nonprofit standards.
  • Manage annual audits and tax filings in collaboration with external auditors.
  • Oversee administrative HR functions, including health insurance and retirement plan registration, as well as vacation and sick leave tracking.
  • Oversee building maintenance and the commercial real estate business with the objective of minimizing vacancies and maximizing rental income.
  • Supervise finance and building maintenance staff and the external real estate agent, foster a culture of accountability, performance, and continuous improvement.

Technology & Process Improvement

  • Lead initiatives to implement and optimize financial systems and technologies that improve reporting, efficiency, and data accuracy.
  • Drive automation of budgeting, forecasting, and reporting processes.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor on the financial implications of technology investments and operational decisions.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Assist the CEO in developing KPIs, dashboards, and reporting frameworks to evaluate performance across departments and core functions.
  • Monitor and report on the financial performance of commercial activities and ensure sustainability and mission alignment.
  • Provide clear, concise financial reports to the CEO, Board of Directors, and Finance Committee.

Compliance, Risk & Governance

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, legal, and financial reporting requirements.
  • Evaluate and manage financial risk, internal controls, and financial policies.
  • Support the Board of Directors and Finance Committee with financial planning and analysis.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or related field
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive financial management experience
  • Demonstrated experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting
  • Strong understanding of GAAP; nonprofit financial experience a plus
  • Proven track record of using technology to streamline financial operations (e.g., integrating financial systems with CRM, HR, budgeting, dashboard and other software systems.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to translate financial data into strategic insights

Preferred:

  • CPA, CFA or MBA
  • Experience in a nonprofit or membership-based organization with commercial operations
  • Familiarity with e-commerce, inventory, and subscription revenue models
  • Experience supporting organizational change and digital transformation
