You are a member of an elite wyvern-flying team, independently contracted couriers for the Wyvern Express in the land of Osoa. For years, you and your fellow riders have taken to the air to deliver the mail swiftly from coast to coast – a dangerous job, but you’re good at what you do, and your rates are high, but reasonable. Enter Durg Granitebane, a wealthy artificer, who has invented the “engine,” a device that is about to revolutionize industry and communication in the Kingdoms – and put you out of a job. Recently incorporated as the Ibaia & Ordokia Eastern Railway Co., Granitebane’s engine and its train of cargo cars is leaving on its inaugural run today, with cars full of letters, money orders, and packages bound for Stormcross and the tempestuous shores of Sorcerers' Lake. The Wyvern Express is about to be obsolete.
But it isn’t yet.
The Council of Three has set down an ultimatum: if (and only if) the I&O train can deliver the official mail delivery contract to Stormcross safely and quickly, the contract belongs to Granitebane. And as the boss always says, where there’s a will, and a wyvern, there’s a way.
Become a daredevil rider of the Wyvern Express and sabotage the mail train in this Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition one shot session, written and designed by the American Philatelic Society Editorial team. Inspired by the Pony Express, the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, the Wild West, and train robberies, the game will debut in two live sessions at the Great American Stamp Show in Hartford on Sunday, August 18.
You can pre-register to play one of the sessions here. No prior experience required, but familiarity with D&D helps!
Attending the show and want to learn more about D&D? Check out the display booth by New England’s premier tabletop game and hobby location, The Battle Standard. The Battle Standard’s Dungeon Master, Myles Tate-Alsgard, will be running the live sessions - stop by and watch the game unfold!
Not a fan of D&D? Other board games (including some stamp collecting games) will be available. Bring a few friends together and play a game or two!
About Dungeons & Dragons
Fifty years ago, the first copies of the original Dungeons & Dragons game were released, co-developed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson of Tactical Studies Rules. The original edition combined wargaming with fantasy in an exciting new way. Only 1,000 copies were originally printed and sold through mail order ads and local conventions, but the project grew quickly, expanding to Europe, launching multiple side projects and supplements, and spurring the creativity and early careers of countless epic fantasy and science fiction writers and creatives, including Terry Pratchett, Robert Jordan, Steven Erikson and Ian Esslemont, and Raymond Feist. At the heart of D&D over the years is the celebration of the creativity of fans. Anyone can use the base system of the game and create their own worlds, build their own rules and characters, and turn D&D into a game that works for their adventuring party.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the creation of the tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons, the United States Postal Service issued a pane of 20 commemorative stamps with 10 designs at Gen Con Indy 2024 on August 1. These new D&D stamp issues and related products will be available for purchase at the USPS booth at GASS 2024.
