Using philatelic artifacts from the era, Mr. Maselis’ presentation will cover the following topics:
- Early mail and mail routes in the Belgian Congo.
- European exploration, the abolitionist movement, transportation, and more.
- The impact of technology upon correspondence and postal history.
Mr. Maselis serves as the President of the Club de Monte-Carlo, Immediate Past President of the Royal Philatelic Society London, Past President of Academie Royal de Philatelie de Belgique, Council Member of the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum, Corresponding Member of the Academie de Philatelie (France) and the Real Academia Hispanica de Filatelia e Historia Postal (Spain); Honorary Member of the Russian Philatelic Academy and the Club of Elite Russian Philately.
Maselis’ collections and philatelic interests are: Belgium and its colonies and the Free State of Congo. He has won many awards including: Luxphila 2008, Grand Prix; Antverpia 2010, Rossica 2014, Europhilex London 2015, Large Gold; Sindelfingen 2013, 2015, Golden Posthorn; European Philatelic Literature Award, 2005; FEPA Medal for literature, 2006. FEPA medal for exceptional study and research, 2010; Tapling medal, RPSL, 2010; Collectors Club New York award, 2011. In addition, Mr. Maselis has written, “From the Azores to New Zealand” (5 editions in different languages), 2005, “Lado, Postal history of the Enclave” (with Vincent Schouberechts and Léo Tavano), 2009 as well as dozens of articles in magazines all over the world. Maselis resides in Belgium and speaks Dutch, French, English, German, Spanish, Hungarian.
