APS On-the-Road Course
Discover the Rich History of the Seaposts
One of our popular courses this summer is "Introduction to the Seaposts: Ship Letters, Packet Mail, Paquebots and More," a course taught by Gary Loew, a philatelic researcher, author, and APS life member. In this course, you will explore the many aspects of how mail was transported across the oceans, and learn the "four pillars" of postal history: rates, routes, means, and marks. You'll delve into the technological and postal innovations that enabled the explosive growth of European empires beginning with the Age of Exploration. Finally, you will journey through the rich history of the Seaposts while learning more about the ships that sailed, postal contracts, and the role of the Universal Postal Union.
Topics that will be covered include:
- Early ship letters
- Packet Ship mail
- Naval maritime mail
- Sea Post Offices
- Ocean Letters
- Catapult mail
The course instructor, Gary Wayne Loew, is a well-known philatelic researcher and author of the upcoming book "Mastering Postal History," as well as a frequent columnist for Kelleher's Stamp Collector's Quarterly, The Collectors Club Philatelist, The Philatelic Literature Review, Cameo, The Airpost Journal, Flagstaff, and The Philatelic Exhibitor. He is a regular instructor at APS' Summer Seminar and national stamp shows. He has also helped to digitize philatelic publications for the USPCS, USSS, and the U.S. Postal Bulletin. The APS is proud to share Gary's expertise with philatelists around the country through our On-the-Road courses.
