On this day in 1941, the Croatian state issued its first stamps. The stamps were issued shortly after the independent state of Croatia was declared on April 10, 1941, after the Germany Army destroyed the Army of Yugoslavia. The stamps that were used were Yugoslavian stamps featuring Petar the second, which were overprinted with the name of the state. The values that were overprinted were from .50 to 5.50 Dinar (the entire set can be seen in the image slider below). Overprinted Yugoslavian stamps continued to be used in the country until November of that year.
Also on this day in 1952, the country of Laos issued its first airmail stamps. These stamps were part of a series celebrating the country joining the Universal Postal Union in May of that year. 200,000 of each of the two stamps were printed and available on sale for an "unlimited" amount of time.
Before1951, stamps of French-Indochina were used in the country. During the first years of postal service in the country, most of the stamps were designed by Mare Leguay and Chamnane Prisayane. Afterward, the Laotian Post Office began to work with younger native artists such as Thao Tuan, Ng Cam, Tiao Mani Khatinarath, Sanguan Rodboon, Thong Ching, and Ky Phungehaleun.
