The American Philatelist
The American Philatelist, or “the AP,” as it’s affectionately known, is the oldest continuously published philatelic journal in the world. The journal is published monthly and is available free to all APS members.
Each month, the AP focuses on a different topic, from the art of stamps to the philately of East Asia, allowing every facet of the hobby to shine. APS members from around the world contribute the majority of feature articles in each issue, which are illustrated with philatelic materials from their own collections.
Publishing schedule: Monthly
Format: In print and online
How to access: Regular membership with the APS includes delivery of each issue of the AP directly to your door. Regular, digital, and associate members can also access the digital AP via the APS website; once logged into the website, visit the AP page and scroll to the magazine reader to read the latest issue, or select a past issue from the digital bookshelf below the reader. Non-members can read selected issues on the same webpage to sample the magazine.
StampEd
Our newest publication, StampEd, provides a modern outlook on a traditional hobby. Published quarterly, StampEd is totally free to read for APS members and non-members alike, and is available exclusively online. The magazine aims to be a home to both new and non-traditional collectors, offering features and columns on stamp art, topical collecting, stamp technology, basics, design and designers, and more.
Publishing schedule: Quarterly
Format: Online only
How to access: Visit https://stamped.pub/ and scroll to the magazine reader on the homepage. To read online, we recommend using the fullscreen button in the lower right of the magazine reader. You can also download the magazine to read on a tablet or phone, share with friends, or print out.
Philatelic Literature Review
Philatelists wanting to take a deeper dive into philatelic scholarship can subscribe to the Philatelic Literature Review (PLR), the journal of the American Philatelic Research Library. The journal includes book reviews, scholarship from leading experts, and news from philatelic libraries around the world.
A subscription to the PLR is not included in regular APS membership, but can be purchased for an additional fee.
Publishing schedule: Quarterly
Format: In print (black and white) and online (color)
How to access: U.S. subscribers to the PLR receive each issue of the journal delivered directly to their door. Digital-only and international subscribers can view the PLR online by logging into the APS website, then visiting https://classic.stamps.org/Quarterly-Journal. Scroll to the magazine reader and select the current issue or back issues to read.
